Stop Press for February 17th

February 17, 2009

  • ebooks and publishing: as frightening as any Stephen King story? – Naomi Alderman in The Guardian puts the case for something I’e been banging on about for some time: Amazon is rolling up the publishing supply chain, and if it wants to replace publishers, there#039;s little to stop it.
  • Boycott Dubai: Literature, Censorship and Homophobia in the Gulf – Bookkake – Very concerned about reports of censorship at the Dubai Literary Festival, and organising information and contact details of attendees to encourage a boycott.
  • O’Reilly Media Store: Best of TOC – A collection of the best writing by TOC speakers, and others (including booktwo) – a free download, except you need to register and provide a valid credit card, apparently.
  • Hamish Hamilton: Five Dials – New issue out now. I think this is a great venture, but I’m irritated by the deliberately anti-internet stance (“best downloaded, printed out and enjoyed (we hope) away from the computer”) of what should be a good example of web marketing.
