Stop Press for June 29th through July 3rd

July 4, 2007

  • Free or Ambient? – “Information wants to be free”? Gilbane Publishing on the difference between ‘free of cost’ and ‘readily available’.
  • Press Gazette – Sniffing out new ideas – Newspapers and magazines: a trend is out there for skunkworks pushing innovation. I know lots of people out there working on this stuff in books, but at the coalface. Wonder if any publishers have set up a Project Badger or Red Stripe.

  1. Yes, there are Project Badgers out there. From my limited experience, though, the decision-makers, who appoint the people who will supposedly generate these cutting-edge projects, are ignorant about the web , digital editions, online readability etc, and have little imagination. You won’t find innovations coming from them, or even interesting projects.

  2. That’s a complaint you hear a lot with any new technologies I think: the bosses hear about something cool, scramble some bright young things, then sit on the ideas they come up with because they’re too scared to implement them…
