Publishing in the Digital Age
On the 13th of April 2007 I gave a short talk at the British Council to the alumni of the International Young Publisher of the Year awards, vaguely entitled Publishing in the Digital Age.
If you were there, I’d love some feedback in the comments at the bottom of the page.
Links to some of the things I talked about:
- Ebooks are coming – here’s the post that started this site, and informed the talk.
- Ereaders: some of the models I mentioned.
- Eink paper: One announcement and a cool video.
- Google Book Search
- Scribd – YouTube for text
- Snowbooks – snowbooks.com
- The Snowblog
- Paper Cut book trailer (YouTube) (Google)
- Snowbooks on Myspace
- Snowbooks on Myspace: Lint and Memphis Underground
- Memphis Underground on Last.fm
- Snowbooks in Second Life
- Books on Mobile Phones: ICUE (and my post about them)
- Other stuff that might be (the) way ahead:
- Meet The Author
- Book Blogs – britlitblogs is a good place to start
- Library Apps:
- Networked Books:
- We Are Smarter Than Me
- A Million Penguins (particularly the Banana Version)
- The Frontlist – no more slush pile!
- And finally… The Bookmobile (because I think it’s great).
That’s the lot. It’s starting to look like a summing-up of everything that booktwo.org is about, and my thanks to the British Council for giving me a chance to put it all in a row, and to Snowbooks, for letting me try lots of mad projects – and share them.

Hi James
Thanks for putting up this site – great to have it as a reference that can be used interactively (I’m using it to let my boss and team know about some ideas from here right now!)
It was also fun to read your original blog posting – it would have been even more fun to throw it out to the IYPY group and cause a barney (as we call a bare-knuckled fight over here) but you are, as always, a man of great diplomacy.
Michelle
Thanks for the feedback Michelle…
Glad to hear it’s a useful resource, and glad you like the introductory essay too – I still refer back to it regularly – and still agree with it! For everyone else, it may take a little more time…
For those who don’t know Michelle is a fantastic publisher from South Africa – check out her books at Oshun.
Hi James,
I’m no tech-type but to my own surprise was all energised by your talk at the IYPY seminar. My press is tiny–just two people doing 24 bks a year–and we function out of a small hill town in India which acquired broadband just last year. Our publicity budgets are as small as our town. So your incredibly practical demo of how one can use the net to market effectively and virtually without expense was a huge help. It demystified the whole thing and made me come back and set up a blog for my press the very next week! Watch this space, you might see me turning into a geek…..
Anu – thank you so much. I’m very glad to hear that.
